Concrete driveway contractors near me, working to Hutto's approach rules
Tear-out and replacement, new-build widenings, and the City approach at the street. Poured to Hutto's own code: dowels every 24 in., steel on chairs, a ½ in. joint at the curb.
A Hutto driveway has two owners. The part on your lot is yours. The approach between the property line and the street sits in the City's right-of-way, and the City has rules for it.
Most driveway calls we get are one of three jobs: a settled or broken driveway that needs to come out, a new-build driveway that needs to be wider, or a new approach where a curb has never been cut. Each gets a different scope, but all three run into the same short list of City rules, so we start there.
We are a concrete contractor in Hutto that pulls the permits itself. You won't be sent to GovWell on your own.

SHEET RL-1NOT TO SCALE · PLANNING SKETCH
Planning sketch built from the Hutto UDC (Ch. 3 and 4), the City's 2024 IRC and IPMC amendments (Ord. 2025-008) and its right-of-way manual. Approach thickness and joint details live in the City's Engineering Design Manual, which we confirm with Development Services per job.
Inside the slab
Driveway pavement under the surface: rebar, chairs, joints
Two driveways can look the same on day one. The difference is buried.
Hutto's 2024 code amendments give driveways an accepted build: 4 inches of concrete reinforced with elevated #3 rebar at 16 inches on center each way, sitting on 3×3 or 4×4 concrete bricks. "Elevated" is the word that matters. Steel lying on the dirt does nothing once the slab cracks.
The other buried detail is doweling. Hutto ties driveway, sidewalk and approach together with dowels every 24 inches, so panels can move with the clay without stepping up into a trip edge.
For comparison, TxDOT's general-use Class A concrete for driveways and sidewalks is 3,000 psi at a water-cement ratio of 0.60 or less. We order to at least that.

- Garage dowels. Hutto's code wants the driveway doweled to the house every 24 in. Many garage slabs here are post-tensioned, so no hole gets drilled until tendons are located or the engineer signs off.
- #3 rebar, 16 in. each way. Bars sit on 3×3 or 4×4 concrete bricks so they end up mid-slab, not pressed into the dirt. That is the 4 in. driveway build Hutto's code spells out.
- Sawn control joint. Cut as soon as the slab takes the blade cleanly, so shrinkage and soil movement crack along a straight line inside the joint instead of across a panel.
- Doweled expansion joint. Where a long driveway gets an expansion joint, smooth dowels every 24 in. keep the two slabs level with each other while they move.
- ½ in. curb joint. Fiber, treated lumber or redwood between apron and curb, plus dowels to the curb every 24 in. Damage to street asphalt while removing curb is the contractor's to repair.
Field notes: replacement
Driveway replacement: what contractors look for on clay
A cracked driveway isn't automatically a dead one. These are the signs that say tear it out.
-
Panels that rock or step up at joints
A panel that tips when you walk on its corner has lost the soil under it. Hutto clay shrinks away in a dry August and the panel follows it down. Lifting and patching rarely outlasts the next drought. -
Cracks with one side higher than the other
A hairline crack is cosmetic. A crack you can catch a toe on means the two pieces are moving independently, which is what driveway replacement contractors look for first. -
Water standing against the garage
If the driveway now drains toward the house, the fall has been lost. New concrete gets the slope back; nothing laid on top of the old slab can. -
A broken approach at the curb
The apron takes the most load and sits in the right-of-way. Replacing just the approach means a City ROW permit and dowels back into the curb. -
No steel when we break out a test corner
Older slabs poured without reinforcement or with wire mesh lying at the bottom tend to keep breaking into smaller pieces. That tells us how much of it to replace.
Not ready for replacement? Small, stable cracks and spalled edges are a repair job, and sound but worn slabs can take an overlay.

- 01/07 Before demo
The City permit, and the ROW permit if the approach is in it
Hutto lists "replacing or repairing a driveway" among the jobs that need a permit, filed in GovWell. If the apron at the street comes out too, that part sits in the right-of-way and gets its own ROW permit first.
- 02/07 Before demo
Utility locates under the old driveway
Texas811 gets the call at least 48 hours (not counting weekends) before we dig. In the right-of-way, 811 doesn't locate water and sewer laterals or storm pipes, so we look for meter boxes and cleanouts and dig carefully near them.
- 03/07 Day 1
Break out, haul off, read the old slab
The broken edges tell us what the old driveway had in it: rebar on chairs, mesh lying at the bottom, or nothing. That decides whether we replace every panel or keep the sound ones.
- 04/07 Day 1–2
Fix the clay before forming
Soft spots come out and get replaced, bone-dry clay is dampened, and the grade is set so water runs away from the garage. Nothing poured on top can put back fall that the base doesn't have.
- 05/07 Day 2
Forms, steel on bricks, dowels
#3 rebar at 16 in. each way on concrete bricks, dowels every 24 in. into the garage slab and the curb, and the ½ in. joint at the curb. If the garage slab may be post-tensioned, no hole gets drilled until the tendons are located.
- 06/07 Pour day
First truck at first light, joints the same day
In summer the first truck is ordered for dawn. Broom finish, edges tooled, and control joints sawn as soon as the slab takes the blade cleanly.
- 07/07 The week after
Cure, then wait for the car
Curing compound goes on when the surface sheen leaves, and the slab keeps curing for at least 3 days. Feet after a day or so, cars after about 7 days, heavy trucks later. The permit gets its final inspection.
New builds
Extending a driveway on a new-build lot
The builder poured the minimum. Here is how far you can go.
Hutto has added thousands of homes since 2010 (the population went from 14,698 to 27,577 between the 2010 and 2020 censuses), and a lot of them came with a two-car driveway and a third car parked on the grass. Parking on an unpaved surface is not allowed under the UDC, so the fix is more concrete.
The limit is the front-yard cap: driveway and parking together may cover up to 33% of the front yard, or 50% at the end of a cul-de-sac. On most lots in places like Emory Crossing or Cottonwood Creek that still leaves room for a side pad or a flare.
Two lighter options are allowed too: a "Hollywood" strip driveway (two paved tracks at least 2.5 ft wide with a 3 ft planted strip between) and porous pavement for one- and two-family homes. A permeable pavement driveway costs more per foot and needs upkeep, but it can be the answer when the cap is tight.
Expect the HOA to want a drawing before the City does. If you are also thinking about the back yard, we pour patio slabs on the same mobilization, and the front walk can tie into the new pad.
Sealing
When to seal a driveway in Central Texas sun
The honest answer: the joints matter more than the surface.
Plain gray broom-finished concrete doesn't need a film sealer to survive Hutto. We don't salt roads here, and the City's own code rates weathering "Negligible." A penetrating water repellent can help it shed oil and stains, and that is about it.
What does pay off is sealing the joints. An open joint lets every storm pour water straight into the clay under the slab, so that strip swells while the rest doesn't. A flexible joint sealant keeps the water on top, where the slope can carry it away.
Stamped and colored driveways are different: they get a sealer as part of the finish. Whether you hire us or other driveway sealing contractors, ask what product is going down and whether it is film-forming or penetrating. Film sealers on a broom finish can turn slick.
Cost
Concrete driveway cost factors
What moves driveway pavement cost on a Hutto job, roughly in order of how often it surprises people.
Tear-out and haul-off
The old slab's thickness and whether it has steel in it decide how long breaking and hauling take. It is often a quarter of the job or more.
The approach and curb
A new or moved curb cut means sawing curb, a ROW permit, dowels into the curb and repairing any street asphalt the work damages.
Area and thickness
Square feet × thickness = yards ordered. A pad for an RV or work truck goes thicker than one for a sedan.
Subgrade on clay
Soft spots get dug out and replaced; bone-dry clay gets moisture-conditioned. We price what the probe finds.
Rebar and dowels
Rebar on bricks and dowels every 24 in. at house, curb and expansion joints add material and labor, and they are required.
Driveway finish
Broom finish is standard. Exposed aggregate, borders or a stamped finish add to it.
Truck access to the driveway
Most driveways are pour-from-the-chute jobs, the cheapest kind. A side-yard or rear pad may need a pump.
Questions
Driveway questions from Hutto homeowners
How wide can a driveway curb cut be in Hutto?
12 to 20 feet at the property line for a one- or two-family home, not counting the flared curb returns (Hutto UDC Chapter 3). A wider driveway can still flare out once it is inside your lot, within the front-yard paving cap.
How soon can I park on a new driveway?
About 7 days. Walking on it is fine after a day or so. Cars wait a week, the same 7 days TxDOT uses before it opens new concrete pavement to traffic, and heavy trucks or a loaded trailer wait longer.
Do you pour driveways in July and August?
Yes, at first light. The first truck is ordered for dawn, concrete temperature is checked at the chute, and curing compound goes on as soon as the surface sheen leaves. If wind and heat push evaporation past the mandatory-precaution line, we move the date.
My address says Hutto but I'm outside city limits. Who issues the permit?
Not always the City; it depends on the road. Some Hutto addresses sit outside the city, as the City's own FAQ notes. A driveway onto a county road goes through Williamson County, which inspects culvert driveways when forms are set and before concrete is placed; a driveway onto a state highway such as US 79 goes through TxDOT's Form 1058. We sort out which applies before we quote.
Is 4 inches thick enough?
Yes, for cars: Hutto's code lists 4 in. of concrete with #3 rebar at 16 in. each way on concrete bricks as an accepted driveway build. Where an RV, a box truck or a loaded trailer parks, we pour thicker and say so on the quote.
Will the new driveway match my old one or the neighbors'?
No, not exactly at first. New gray concrete is lighter than a slab that has weathered for years, and it darkens and evens out with time. If an exact match matters, plan on replacing whole panels joint to joint, not patching inside one.
